Sign up an apprentice or trainee
Signing up an apprentice or trainee with us is easy. Once you're ready, just send through a sign-up request and our team will take it from there — preparing and lodging the Training Contract, helping you choose a Registered Training Organisation, and getting everything approved so the apprenticeship can officially begin.
- What does being a supervisor involve?
Supervising an apprentice or trainee doesn't mean you need all the answers from day one. It's about giving them a safe, fair and supportive environment to learn in — showing them the ropes, setting clear expectations, and helping them build confidence as they go.
Supervision ratios
We're delegated to approve the following supervision ratios:- Licensed trades: 1 supervisor to 1 apprentice e.g. electrical and plumbing
- Non-licensed trades: 1 supervisor to 4 apprentices e.g. other trades
- All other qualifications: 1 supervisor to 4 apprentices/trainees e.g. business, childcare
Never supervised an apprentice before? You're not on your own — our mentors work alongside you and your team throughout the placement to help you get it right.
- Hiring an apprentice or trainee
Growing your team with an apprentice or trainee brings new skills into your business, helps address the skills shortages affecting your industry, and plays a real part in building the Territory's future workforce.
Why hire an apprentice or trainee?
- Bring in new skills — apprentices and trainees bring fresh thinking and practical ability, trained to meet the specific needs of your business
- Address skills shortages — build the workforce you need now, rather than competing for experienced hires in a tight market
- Skill up the Territory's future workers — invest in local talent and help close the skills gap the NT economy is facing
- Am I ready to hire an apprentice?
Not sure which pathway suits the role you're hiring for?
Here's the difference:
- Apprenticeships — typically 3 to 4 years, for skilled trades like construction, automotive and electrical. Combines paid work with formal training toward a nationally recognised qualification.
- Traineeships — usually shorter, 1 to 3 years, covering industries like administration, IT and hospitality.
- School-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBATs) — hire a student while they're still at school. They work part-time and study alongside their secondary schooling, giving you early access to motivated talent before they graduate.
